Officers with the Hawkesbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will face no charges in relation to a 2021 accident west of L’Orignal that left a teenager injured.
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in Mississauga, Joseph Martino, determined there are no reasonable grounds to believe that Hawkesbury OPP officers committed a criminal offence in connection with the pursuit of a 17-year-old male driver.
On April 12, 2021, a youth was seriously injured in a rollover crash on the gravel shoulder of County Road 17, west of L’Orignal, after the OPP disengaged a brief police pursuit. Martino concluded the two officers involved were in the lawful discharge of their duty to stop the driver.
The youth was operating a stolen vehicle and there were grounds to believe he had committed a criminal offence. Martino found no evidence to suggest police caused or contributed to the crash.
